Two people connected to the Olds College turfgrass management program have received awards from the Canadian Golf Superintendents Association (CGSA).

Carmen Kozak, who received a diploma from the college's turfgrass management program this past spring, received the Future Superintendent award. She is the first woman to ever receive it.

The award goes to student members of the CGSA who are completing their graduating year and are on a career path to become a golf course superintendent.

Kozak is a foreman at the River Bend Golf Course in Red Deer.

Jim Ross, a research manager with the Olds College Centre of Innovation, has received the John B. Steel Distinguished Service award, which goes to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the golf course superintendent profession. Recipients of this award are nominated by their peers.

“We are proud to have two shining stars representing Olds College and our turfgrass management program,” says Debbie Thompson, dean of animal sciences and horticulture at Olds College.

She says it's a reflection of the expertise of staff in the turfgrass faculty.
