Old-fashioned-style street lights – part of the Uptowne Olds renewal project – are expected to arrive this week and the goal is to put them together and install them October 14 or 15.

That's the word from Olds chief operating officer Scott Chant.

Chant made that prediction in an email relayed to Uptowne Olds committee members and the news media.

Chant also says there's also a possibility that some other amenities, like benches, garbage cans and bike racks may be installed this year as well.

“We have talked about funds from this year's road program to make some of those things happen this year,” Chant said in the email.

Paving of 50th Avenue between 50th and 52nd streets began Thursday and was completed on Friday.

The $1.5-million project, which began in July, also involved installing new sewer and water facilities as well as new concrete sidewalks.

Unlike previous years, the new street lamps will be installed on both sides of the avenue.

That will eventually enable merchants to string Christmas lights across the avenue, from lamppost to lamppost.

However, that's not expected to occur this Christmas season, because the logistics have to be worked out with Fortis, which is supplying the lampposts. Town officials say Fortis reps want to be sure the lamps can support the weight of the lights.
