Here are a few safety tips and facts to keep you safe over the holidays.

When purchasing an artificial Christmas tree, make sure it is labelled “fire resistant.” Although this label does not mean the tree won't catch fire, it does indicate the tree will resist burning and that a fire can be extinguished quickly.

When picking a real tree, choose one with fresh, green needles that do not fall off.

Before placing the tree in the stand, cut five centimetres (two inches) from the base of the trunk.

Add water to the stand. Make sure to add water daily.

When lighting the tree, use lights that have a label from a recognized testing laboratory such as ULC. Some lights are for indoor or outdoor use only.

NEVER use lit candles to decorate any Christmas tree.

Always turn off Christmas lights – including Christmas tree lights -- before leaving home or going to bed.

Real Christmas trees only last three to four weeks. Get rid of the tree after Christmas or when it is dry.

Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home, in the garage, or placed outside against your home.

Check with the Town of Olds about possible recycling programs.
