The Sundre-based Mountainview Taekwondo Club is rolling along with golden winning efforts following its successful 19th annual local tournament on Oct. 27.

Club members went to Edmonton on Nov. 3 for the Tiger Challenge Tournament and four members came home as winners in free sparring and patterns (poomse) competitions.

Ciana Anhorn won gold in sparring and patterns. Brandt Anhorn took silver in sparring and bronze in patterns. Dennis Courtoreille won bronze in both sparring and patterns while George Fehr took home gold in patterns and added a bonze in sparring.

Club members are now preparing for the belt testing competition on Dec. 8 at the Sundre Arts Centre. Four members are testing for their black belts – Crossfield's Ciana Anhorn, Sundre's Courtney Armstrong, Ajay Talbot, also of Sundre, and Olds' Lorrie McAllister.

“That is a big deal for them to accomplish,” said Cherie Johnson, spokesperson for the club and the newly formed non-profit Mountainview Taekwondo Society. She added Sundre's Jim Hall will be testing for his second dan black belt.

Club members are also preparing for the Nov. 17 Whitecourt Tournament, said Johnson.

Meanwhile, the club is already preparing for next year's 20th Annual Taekwondo Tournament following the success of the 19th tourney held late last month at the Sundre High School gym.

“They want to spruce that (20th annual tourney) to make it a big celebration,” said Johnson.

She said more than 200 spectators and athletes travelled from all over Alberta to experience and participate in the Oct. 27 event, which also saw local athletes from Caroline, Olds, Sundre, and Crossfield competing.

“This gives students the opportunity to be recognized for all their hard work and dedication to martial arts,” said Johnson. “Local businesses, numerous volunteers, parents and referees all made this event a huge success.”
