The Olds Stingers defeated the Calgary Mavericks 8-7 in overtime Sunday in Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League action. It was the Stingers' second victory in three outings so far this season.

“They fought back very courageously. They were down 3-0 in the first and came back in the second and were up 5-4 (after) the second period,” said Michael Bouma, the junior B, Tier III team's coach.

The team opened up a 7-5 lead in the middle of the third period before the Mavericks tied it, sending it to overtime.

“I think the players played exceptionally well. They were very well disciplined, they controlled their emotions, they stayed focused with the game and they were able to execute … the outcome that we were looking for. Overall, I think the boys settled down and were able to control the game extremely well,” Bouma said of the team's overall effort.

Bouma said the Stingers controlled the play for most of the game, and without the effort of the Mavericks' goaltender, the victory would have been by a much wider margin.

The Stingers also won the season opener 9-5 on April 22 against the Rockyview Silvertips before being defeated 15-3 by the Crowsnest Pass Ravens on April 29.

The Stingers will be playing their home opener on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Bouma said that game against the Medicine Hat Sun Devils promises to be a good contest, with the two teams evenly matched thus far in the season.

“It will be an interesting game,” he said.
