Grizzlys seeks new business manager

The Olds Grizzlys are looking for a new business manager following the departure of Tammy Moritz after three years of service to the Alberta Junior Hockey League team. The Grizzlys made the announcement last week in a press release, following the decision made by the board of directors on April 17.

“The board had certainly looked at it and said a change in direction is necessary here,” he said.

Moritz provided three years service to the Grizzlys.

The Grizzlys are currently seeking Moritz's replacement and have set an application deadline of May 11. For more information on the position, potential applicants are encouraged to go to www.oldsgrizzlys.com. The Grizzlys hope to have someone in place by June 1.

Spartans looking for better result in home opener

The Olds High School girls rugby team opened its season on Wednesday with a 29-5 loss to the Notre Dame High School Cougars in Red Deer.

George Grant, the Spartans coach, said the result was not unexpected, as the team has only four Grade 12 players this year. Last year, the team graduated several players.

“It's a bit of a learning experience. We had to get into our first games … and show the girls what it is we're trying to accomplish in practices. It's a good learning tool. The girls did learn an awful lot from that and our practices since have been much better, higher tempo,” he said.

Grant said since the first practice got underway, team members have shown much improvement in their understanding of the game. As the season progresses, the Spartans need to improve their communication on the field and be more aggressive in pursuit of opposition ball carriers.

“We just need to be a little more aggressive in our hitting and making certain that we contain their ball carrier better than what we did against Notre Dame and try and put them to the ground and make them give the ball up,” he said.

The battle of the Spartans will take place Wednesday when Rimbey Junior Senior High School comes to town for OHS's home opener. The game starts at 5 p.m.

Other stops in Alberta include one in Lethbridge, Nanton, Okotoks, Spruce Grove, Lacombe, Calgary and Red Deer. The Alberta tournaments are part of a larger schedule that will see 50 MJT-sponsored tournaments take place across Canada over the course of the summer.
