The Olds High School Spartans football team wrapped up another year on Nov. 26 during the team's awards night held at the school.

Although the Spartans had no league to play in during the season, they picked up numerous games with other teams, ending the year with a 6-3 record.

Connor Jorgensen, the team's quarterback who is in Grade 10, was named the top rookie for 2013, an honour he thinks will help him going into the 2014 season. In an interview following the awards presentations, he said coaches and the offensive linemen helped him a lot during the year.

“All the veterans on the team, all around me, that make it so much easier for me to step into that position and all the feedback made me better. I can't wait for the next two years,” he said.

With this year's experience, Jorgensen said he feels confident going into 2014 that the team will improve over this year's results, where the Spartans lost in their final game of the season to the top ranked Tier III team, the Cochrane High School Cobras.

“I feel like we could do better next year and better the year after that,” he said.

Other awards that were handed out included Klay Quilley as the top lineman and Brody Spreeman as the top defensive lineman. Austin Waldron and Kevin Spicer were deemed by the coaching staff to have contributed the most to the team while Ty Smith was named the team's top offensive player. Tanner Pochapsky was named the top defensive player for the Spartans in 2013 and Quade Smith was named the team's top back. Ryland Couture was chosen as the team's most valuable player.
