Golfer Jason Thiels of Olds finished in a tie for 28 at Alberta Golf's Alberta Men's Amateur Championship held from July 16 to 19 at the Sundre Golf Club. Thiels finished with a 303 total (+15) over 72 holes.

Thiels opened the tournament with a 77 on the first day, followed by a 75, another 75 and a final round of 76.

“I hung in there,” he said. “I made a lot of mental mistakes, I felt.”

While the playing conditions were difficult, with fast greens, Thiels said he felt they didn't play much of a factor in how he finished the tournament.

“You had to be very defensive. You had to play smart and basically grind it out for 18 holes every day,” he said.

While having played at the Sundre Golf Club in the past helped him a bit, Thiels said not executing shots was more of a factor in how he finished the tournament.

Thiels tied with Tyler Saunders of Edmonton.

Riley Fleming of the Collicutt Siding Golf Club in Crossfield won the tournament with a final score of 281 (-7). Fleming was one of four golfers to finish the tournament under par.
