Local teens win softball gold at Alberta Summer Games

Three local girls won gold medals in softball at the 2014 Alberta Summer Games in Airdrie.Zone 2, which includes Olds, defeated Zone 7 in the championship game on July 27 by a score of 10-3.

Three local girls won gold medals in softball at the 2014 Alberta Summer Games in Airdrie.Zone 2, which includes Olds, defeated Zone 7 in the championship game on July 27 by a score of 10-3.“I felt very happy and very proud of ourselves as a team because we worked so hard to get there. Like out of all the teams, I think we definitely took the games very seriously,” said Allison Land, 16, from Olds.“We respected what we ate in our diet, we went to bed on time. We just took care of ourselves physically.”According to softball's mercy rule, a game is ended if one team is ahead of the other by seven runs after five innings.As a result, the Zone 2 team didn't realize they won the game until they were called into the dugout, where coaches broke the news.“We didn't really know it was over, actually,” said Kennedy Murphy, a Didsbury resident on the team. “We all came in, we thought something had happened but then our coaches told us we had won.”The 16-year-old described the team's delayed reaction to the victory.“Jumping around, there was a lot of hugging going around. It was just really good,” she said.For Sieanna Birch, the highlights of the tournament included activities off the field, such as team dinners and a dance.It was an experience the 15-year-old from Olds would recommend others to partake in.“I guess it was a great experience.
