Innisfail's Levi Severtson, 18, is heading to the U.S. this week to ready for the International Canoe Federation Junior Canoe Slalom World Championships.

“I'm pretty excited,” said Severtson, who is a coach with the Cottonwood Kayak Club of Innisfail.

He said it's been his goal for the last two years to get the opportunity to compete at worlds. Last year, he competed in pre-worlds but said it wasn't as intense as what he expects this year. During pre-worlds only four countries were represented. He said he thinks about 34 should show up for the event this year that runs July 10 to 15 on the Wisconsin River in downtown Wausau, Wis.

He said he placed in the junior nationals last month in Kananaskis, landing him on the Canadian team. He said there are three Canadians in his division.
