Thirteen teams from surrounding areas registered to participate in the 8th annual Swing for Charity over the weekend.

Enthusiastic teammates played baseball in the snow and were dressed according to this year's theme ìcall of the wildî.

Teams from Lac La Biche, Cremona, Cochrane, Olds, Didsbury and more visited Sundre for the two-day tournament.

The A event winner was the Roughies, while Off in the Woods cinched the B event, and the River Rats took first in the third event.

The funds raised from the tournament are being donated to four local charities, said co-organizer Kim Comfort.

The four charities include the Sundre Fire and Rescue Society, Nutrition for Learning, the Sundre Ladies Auxiliary and River Valley School.

ìWe always continue to donate and support our volunteer fire department,î she explained.

ìThey are essential to this community as they have been there to help us or someone we know.î

The Swing for Charity committee consists of 12 volunteers from around the community.

ìWhat we try to do is support events that have to do with children,î said Comfort.

Comfort said local businesses sponsor the event each year and people within the community donate their time, services, cash or door prizes.

There was also a cabaret held at the event over the weekend, which was a success in raising money as well.

ìWe have raised $70,000 to date, in the past seven years,î said Comfort.

Council waived fees to use the Sundre ball diamonds for this event at a meeting in January.

However, Mayor Annette Clews was opposed because the committee has not donated to Sundre Minor Ball.

ìAs a committee, we try to pick groups to donate to that benefit youth and are not already funded by the participants,î explained Comfort.

The goal for this year's event was to raise at least $10,000, as they did last year, she said.

The amount raised was not available at press time.

ìThis event shows how well our community works together to make an event so big and to be able to donate,î she said.

ìIf we didn't have that community support then a fundraiser like this would not succeed in our town,î she added.

She said this year there were more committee members.

ìIt helps out a lot when you have more people volunteer their time, which is always appreciated,î she said.

ìThe community support is always very strong and well received.î
