SUNDRE — A date has been set for the class of 2019’s graduation ceremony, said the local high school’s principal.

The annual convocation commemorating the major milestone in the lives of students, usually held towards the end of June, had recently been postponed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Scott Saunders, Sundre High School and Sundre Learning Centre principal, informed The Albertan by email on June 3 that a date has been for Aug. 29 at the school.

“We are trying to stay as close to a normal graduation ceremony as possible while still honouring the requirements of AHS (Alberta Health Services),” Saunders wrote.

The ceremony’s traditional elements, such as speeches, will be “live streamed into classrooms, where the students will be social distancing,” he said.

“After the formal program, students will come to the stage in the gymnasium one at a time to accept their certificate and have their formal picture taken. Families will be able to come in and see their graduate walk across the stage as well.”

Plans are to keep the number of people in each classroom, as well as the gymnasium, under 15 to adhere to AHS requirements.

However, plans for the graduation’s program will be adjusted accordingly if health regulations change before the ceremony, he said.
