Two females were taken to hospital after a head-on collision north of Sundre on Highway 22 recently.

The female driver had been trapped inside the vehicle she was operating before emergency crews were able to free her.

“When emergency services arrived on scene it was found that a female driver of one of the involved vehicles was trapped within a newer model SUV,” said Sundre RCMP Const. Matt Floyd. “The highway was closed for less than an hour for safety, while fire services from both Caroline and Sundre performed a vehicle extrication to remove the trapped driver from the SUV and to clean up road debris.”

A pickup truck travelling southbound crossed the centre line, colliding with the SUV, sending both vehicles into the ditch on the east side of the highway.

Both vehicles had severe damage to the front end and the driver's side. There were two female occupants in the SUV and one male occupant in the pickup truck.

“The female driver of the SUV and her passenger both suffered broken arms while the driver and only occupant of the truck was able to walk away from the incident with no reported physical injuries,” said Floyd.

“Charges are pending at this time due to further investigation. Alcohol was not a factor, nor was speed at the time.”

The collision happened at approximately 7:40 p.m. on Dec. 14.

“The Sundre RCMP would like to remind all drivers that although road conditions may look favourable, due to colder weather you must be vigilant to monitor roadways for ice and loose surface material,” he said. “Only by active driving habits and a conscious effort to remain aware of your surroundings can incidents like these be prevented.”
