Sundre Curling Club ladies’ bonspiel brings out 16 teams

Curlers grateful to be back “out and having life sort of back to normal,” club treasurer says

SUNDRE — There were 16 teams participating in the ladies’ bonspiel at the local rink this past weekend.

Players came from Olds, Cochrane and Caroline, including locals as well.

Although it was the Sundre Curling Club’s second bonspiel of the season, it was the first ladies’ bonspiel held since the start of the pandemic almost two years ago.

“It was a very good event — everybody seemed to be really happy and grateful to be out and having life sort of back to normal,” said Sue Comfort, the club’s treasurer, adding the theme was “The Way We Were” and that there was a good variety of some really good costumes.

“It’s good to see how people interpret themes,” said Comfort.

The spiel was broken down into four events. The Connie Strautman rink from Olds won the A event; the Candace Klatt rink from Caroline took the B event title; the Alicia Brooks rink from Cochrane won the B event; and the Renee Gibson rink from Sundre won the D event.

Comfort expressed appreciation to both the local business community that supported the event, as well as volunteers and club members who got involved in helping to make the bonspiel’s return possible.

The next upcoming event is the Sundre Oilmen’s bonspiel, which is scheduled for March 11-13.
