Sundre Arts Centre mostly packed for volunteer appreciation performance

Comedic musical performer Ben Crane takes to the stage in Sundre to deliver laughs about some of the quirks of aging

SUNDRE – Active community volunteers who were so inclined to attend a recent free appreciation event in their honour got an opportunity to see a performance by comedic musician Ben Crane.

The Sundre Arts Centre was largely packed to its 130 person capacity under a table-and-seating arrangement, on Friday, April 19 during Sundre's annual volunteer appreciation night.

Sundre mayor Richard Warnock, Mountain View County Reeve Angela Aalbers, as well as area MLA Jason Nixon attended the event.

“Volunteering is the priceless gift of empathy that often goes unnoticed yet has the tremendous ability to transform lives,” said Warnock.

“This precious gift can only be given freely by those who choose to contribute to society through selflessness and humanity,” he said.

“In today’s world that seems to be more and more disconnected, volunteering is more and more crucial to the health and stability of our communities, and the impacts from one small act of kindness cannot be measured,” he said, before concluding by also extending gratitude to volunteers who could not attend.

“We deeply admire the work you do in shaping a brighter and more inclusive future for all."

Following official addresses, Crane took to the stage and in one bit similar to American comedian Jeff Foxworthy’s “You might be a redneck” routine, Crane drew plenty of laughs from the crowd with a gag about the quirks of aging dubbed “You might be a geezer” as well as what he called an “anti-woke” country ballad called “Fightin’ Side of Me” that decries attitudes critical of the Western way of life.
