Members of the Sundre High School (SHS) Leo Club cleaned, sorted and packaged recycled eyeglasses in Olds on Saturday to ship to Third World countries.

Although the program is 10 years old, it was the first time Sundre students participated, according to Ryan Beck, leader of the club at SHS.

ìThey are going to be cleaning, sorting, classifying, and I believe packaging eyeglasses that have been donated from across southern Alberta,î said Beck on Thursday.

ìAnd then these eyeglasses get shipped off to Third World countries.

ìOver the last 10 years this program through the Lions Club has shipped two million pairs of eyeglasses from Canada to developing nations.î

He noted that several clubs from surrounding areas also participated in the workshop at the Olds Evergreen Centre.

ìI think it's good for the students to see a well-organized, well-run program in action,î he said.

ìPart of what we're doing here is trying to build a leadership program for our kids. So if they can see that, you know, just normal people have accomplished this and they're doing something meaningful here.

ìAnd it's just positive to be part of something that's a good thing to do.î

The SHS club is always working towards new initiatives and is currently redesigning the student lunchroom. It is a branch of the local Lions Club as well as the leadership club at the school and was formed in the fall.
