A Sundre resident was recovering in a Calgary hospital last week after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing Main Avenue at the Centre Street traffic lights.
On Monday, June 26 at about 5:10 p.m., Sundre RCMP, fire and EMS were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision involving a Dodge Ram pickup and a pedestrian.
The investigation revealed that the truck was travelling south on Centre Street and was the first vehicle stopped at a red light waiting to turn left. After the light turned green the driver proceeded through the intersection making a left turn, where the front of the truck struck a pedestrian who was crossing Main Avenue within the crosswalk and on a "walk" signal, said the RCMP.
The driver told police he did not see the pedestrian because he had momentarily fixed his attention on another pedestrian who was in the west-side crosswalk. The driver of the truck, a 30-year-old male from Sundre, has been charged under the Traffic Safety Act for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Alcohol was not a factor.
The 53-year-old female pedestrian, from Sundre, was transported by STARS to a hospital in Calgary in critical condition and has since been listed in stable condition.
Sundre resident Troy Fee told the Round Up he and his family have been narrowly missed in the past at the same intersection, and he urged motorists to exercise due caution at the traffic lights.
