ELDER PROVIDES INSIGHT ó First Nations Elder Sheldon First Rider visited the Sundre Municipal Library on Saturday, Nov. 28. He is an educator associated with Calgary’s Glenbow Museum. First Rider shared stories and artifacts from the Blackfoot culture with an interested audience of about 25 people. The afternoon opened with a smudge ceremony, and continued with descriptions of Blackfoot traditions and ways of life. First Rider is a survivor of the residential school system, and he described how his life, and the lives of many others, were damaged by the experience. He gave a moving description of how the First Nations interpret the historic Treaty 7, signed in 1877. Those in attendance left with a new appreciation of Blackfoot culture, and the challenges to be faced as we seek truth and reconciliation with the members of Canada’s First Nations.,
