Council approved adoption of a business licence bylaw last month, which immediately came into effect.

ìThe previous bylaw wasn't very explicit, it wasn't at all encompassing and actually put on paper all the things that should be there,î said Linda Wallace, the town's economic development officer.

Wallace said it was adopted to properly express on paper how the business licence process works and who is required to get one.

ìIn trying to utilize the existing bylaw over 2012, it became clear that there were areas that weren't addressed explicitly,î she said.

Requirements outlined in the bylaw include what constitutes a separate business and the specific requirements of acquiring a business licence.

There is also a fee adjustment, where if a business opens for the last quarter of a year, they only need to pay a quarter of the fee, rather than for the whole year.

ìWhen there's a question, we've got better resource to go to, to answer that question rather than just ëthis is the way we do it',î she said. ìIt's now more clearly expressed in the bylaw.î
