SUNDRE – For more than a hundred years, the 4-H program has helped to produce some of the top orators in our province.

These youths and young adults, whose ages range between 9 and 21, have gone on to influence the next generation, become CEOs of corporations and shape our government.

This year, Strathmore will be hosting the best youth communicators in our region this coming Saturday during the regional 4-H public speaking finals.

Competitors will converge at the Strathmore Civic Centre on March 23 to determine the best communicators in the Calgary region.

These 4-H members, who hail from clubs across the region, will be competing in either the speech or presentation category.

There will be representation from more than 15 clubs including Crowfoot Multi, Ropes and Reins, Prairie Winds, Legendary Flatlands, and Sundre Multi to name a few.

To reach the regional level, members have competed and placed in either first or second at their club, area and district level.

Creating a speech or presentation that grabs attention is part of the game, with titles like The Storm Under My Skin, The World’s Greatest Mystery and The Elephant in the Room.

This Saturday’s event will be both entertaining and educational.

“For both the junior and intermediate members, regionals is as far as they can advance,” says Carisa, a senior member with the Bergen Multi.

“The seniors who place first or second will then move on to the provincial level, which takes place at Olds College on April 6.”

The Calgary Regional 4-H Communications event starts with speeches at 10 a.m. followed by presentations at 2:30 p.m., and everyone is welcome to come and support these young communicators.
