A 47-year-old woman charged with first-degree murder in the death of her nine-year-old outside Sundre last month will be back in court next month following a brief appearance in Didsbury provincial court on Monday.

Laura Coward made the appearance before Judge P. McIlhargey via closed-circuit TV.

Coward was charged Sept. 8 after the body of her daughter Amber Lucius was found in a vehicle on a rural road outside Sundre on Sept. 2. The police have not released the cause of death or the exact location where the body was found.

Wearing a grey sweatshirt, Coward appeared to be listening attentively to proceedings. Asked by the judge if she had any questions, she said, “no”.

Coward will be back in court Nov. 3 after defence has a chance to receive and review disclosure information from the Crown.

Robin McIntyre, student at law, appeared for Coward's lawyer Jim Lutz.

Asked how Coward is doing, McIntyre said, “So she is doing OK, as well as can be expected in custody. Mr. Lutz advised that he spoke to her this morning. She (Coward) is concerned about the allegations but she is coping as best she can.”
