A male youth is due in provincial court in Didsbury this February, after being charged with at least three offences in the wake of a fuel theft and a hit-and-run accident behind Mountain View Plaza.

The two incidents occurred on Dec. 23.

It all started at 4:13 p.m. on that day when Olds RCMP received a call that fuel had been stolen at Tedd's Food Mart.

Just minutes later, police were called to the hit and run.

“Subjects were reported as running from the scene after emerging from a car that matched the description of the vehicle involved in the fuel theft,” an RCMP news release says. “Police were able to apprehend the suspects at a residence in Olds within the hour, after learning the identity of the suspects from witnesses.”

“The calls came in within minutes of each other. It was timely, if nothing else, for that second call to come in,” Cpl. Shawn Morgan said during an interview with the Albertan.

Morgan said although a report indicates injuries occurred as a result of the collision, it doesn't appear that they were serious enough to require hospitalization – at least, not at the time.

Although the police report indicates more than one “subject” was seen running from a vehicle involved in the collision, Morgan says only one person was charged.

“Everybody was identified, but there were only grounds to charge one person,” he said.

The youth who drove the alleged offending vehicle is charged with driving at an unreasonable rate of speed, an offence that comes with a $233 penalty if convicted.

He also faces a charge of failing to remain at the scene of a collision as well as theft under $5,000.
