Yoga studio planned to replace daycare

A yoga studio could be opening near 54 Street and 48 Avenue, after council passed an amendment to its land use bylaw on Dec. 14.

It's a site-specific amendment applying to 4802 54 Street, allowing "fitness centre" as a permitted use under its R2 general residential zoning.

The 1,800 square-foot building has housed a daycare since 1990 but after acquiring the property, Jamie-Dee Marshall plans to offer fitness and yoga classes from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Mondays to Saturdays.

"Currently in Olds we don't have any yoga studios inside town. Everyone needs to travel out of town to find a yoga setting. Right now, a whole bunch of fabulous instructors are teaching out of basements of churches in various locations," she said during the public hearing.

"I want to have a real community feel so people can come to the same location and find that fitness space. It will be a location parents can come at six o'clock in the morning and do a class, teenagers can come work out with their parents afterwards."

Town staff said commercial use for the property is already established and the proposed facility would be an added amenity to the community.

Second and third readings were passed unanimously. Coun. Rudy Durieux was absent for the meeting.

Said the mayor, "Congratulations, happy New Year, excellent location for a facility. I'm sure you're going to see all of us there … after Christmas."
