Officials with the Community Learning Campus met with contractors and insurance adjustors on Sept. 10 but are still no closer to repairing the gym floor at the Ralph Klein Centre.

The floor was damaged when water leaked inside during a rainstorm on June 29. A cap on a downspout behind a wall near the wrestling room came off during the storm, allowing water to flow into the facility.

Jordan Cleland, vice-president of advancement at Olds College, said while an assessment was made, no estimates on the damage or timelines for repairs have been finalized.

"They have to check on the availability of materials — and it’s a very specific kind of wood that you need for gymnasium floors – so they’re trying to source materials before we can say (when) work on repairs is going to begin," he said.

Cleland said timing the repairs is a critical issue now that the college and high school are back in fall session and the gym is being used by athletes on a limited basis. The northern-most gym and the wrestling room are still not usable.

While the most significant damage was in the northern third of the gymnasium, the assessment took into account the entire gym to make sure that there isn’t any other damage to the facility.

"They think that if there’s any damage to other parts, it’s minimal," Cleland said.
