In the future, wetlands will be the source of a lot of jobs, thanks to a new provincial policy, the head of an environmental company says.

And Steven Tannas would like to see Olds College be the place to train people for those jobs.

Tannas is president of Tannas Conservation Services Ltd. of the Cremona area.

“In Alberta now with the new wetland policy, wetlands are at the forefront. You can't remove a wetland now without compensation or replacement. So that is now legally the requirement,” Tannas said during Dinner Party in the Wetlands, a fundraiser held Aug. 24 in the Olds College wetlands.

“It's one of those things,” he said. “You can use wetlands, but you must replace them. So it is on the forefront of the radar of government and it's going to be something we're going to be living with in the future.

“There's going to be in restoration of wetlands, massive numbers of jobs in the future. So it's something that hopefully with the college here, we'll be setting up students for that in the future.

“We have lost such a large percentage of the wetlands; through drainage, through development, through many different things.”
