Olds Rural Crime Watch secretary-treasurer Judy Schlichenmayer says a scam has been making the rounds involving people claiming to be from Canada Post.

Schlichenmayer says a friend of hers recently received an email notification from ìCanada Postî telling her they had a parcel they could not deliver and wanted her to click on a link to print a delivery label.

Schlichenmayer says the email looks ìvery legit,î but has several grammatical errors and other issues.

ìShe called Canada Post and was told they never notify clients by email, as they do not have email addresses,î Schlichenmayer says.

Her friend also pointed out the email was in English only, and being a federal Crown corporation, her understanding is that Canada Post provides all correspondence in both official languages.

ìThis is just another example of online fraud and how we need to be diligent when online,î Schlichenmayer says.

ìCheck out the source of any request. Don't click on links unless you are sure they're legitimate. Phone the company from a number you looked up, not one in the body of the questionable email. Don't ever give out personal information, especially banking information.î

If you have given out banking information, call your bank and have employees there watch for fraudulent activity on your account.

Schlichenmayer says more tips on how to deal with fraud/scams are available from the Better Business Bureau. The BBB also has a list of the most common frauds.

If you are scammed, report it to police, she says.
