Wants to organize garage sale for fire victims

An Olds resident wants to set up a town-wide garage sale with proceeds going to the Red Cross to help victims of the Fort McMurray-area wildfires.

Sue Smyth's plan is for the sale to take place on Saturday, May 14 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

She says she's contacted the town and the Chamber of Commerce in an effort to organize it.

Rather than hold the sale in one central place, Smyth would like to see each residence, neighbourhood or business hold its own garage sale.

“I was thinking of contacting the town and doing it in Centennial Park or something, but then everybody has to find tables and everybody has to drag their stuff there,” Smyth said. “I thought if they just did, like, little block parties or something, that would be simple. Everybody's got stuff to sell.”

Smyth has created a Facebook event page for the sale. Here's the link:

Smyth says she felt she just had to do something.

“It was just weird. I was cooking French toast this morning and I thought, ‘you know what, some people don't even have a frying pan, so could you just do something about this?'”

Smyth would like to see Olds residents challenge other communities to hold big garage sales for the cause as well.

“I think that would up the ante a little bit,” she says.
