A water line rupture at the intersection of 51 Avenue and 51 Street on the morning of July 31 was repaired in roughly three hours with minimal disruptions to water service in the area.

Scott Chant, the Town of Olds' interim operational services director, said work crews were digging to expose a water line at the intersection in order to install a valve when the line was ruptured just after 10 a.m.

Crews from the town and AIC Construction had isolated the leak and repaired the rupture by roughly 1 p.m., he added, and water service disruptions were confined to 51 Street between 50 and 51 avenues.

A large excavation hole at the intersection beside the Canada Post office was filled with water following the rupture and crews pumped the water out into a nearby storm drain.

The work at the intersection was connected to current water and sewer repair efforts on 50 Avenue.

Chant said work crews were preparing the water line at the time of the rupture for the installation of a valve that would allow them to turn the water off in the area around the intersection so that an existing water line on 51 Street can be connected to a new water line that will be installed along 50 Avenue.

He added the work was supposed to be a "routine dig."

"But it didn’t go as well as planned."
