Town steps up for tour

Olds as a destination along the Tour of Alberta is back on the table.

At its regular meeting on April 11, council approved a $15,000 contribution toward the $150,000 hosting rights fee for the Stage 2 finish on Sept. 2.

There are three other partners that still need to approve contributions of their own: Mountain View County, Olds College and the Olds Institute.

According to chief operating officer Doug Wagstaff, the town would only be responsible for its share of the total fee, funded through its special events and council promotions budget. The Tour of Alberta would cover the balance.

As well, several groups, including Uptowne Olds and Communities in Bloom have decided not to help organize the Harvest Festival this year, focusing instead on Oldstice, he said.

"This is an interesting proposal. What prevented me from supporting the last one was the amount of money. This seems to be a lot more reasonable," said Coun. Harvey Walsh. "I can support this."

However, two councillors were opposed to the motion at hand: Mary Jane Harper and Mary Anne Overwater.

Harper said she was not opposed to the event or the sponsorship but wanted the motion amended to state it would be approved with the cooperation of the other partners.
