To switch jobs next month, Doug Wagstaff only has to cross the street.

Wagstaff, who is currently Olds College's campus life manager, was named as the Town of Olds' new community services director earlier this month.

The position has been vacant since Barbara Hill retired in June.

While working for the college for the past 17 years, Wagstaff said he has also been involved in minor sports organizations as well as the former Olds Before and After School Care program.

He was also a trustee on the Chinook's Edge School Division board from 2004 to 2010.

This level of community involvement, he said, has prepared him for the new job.

"My wife and I made a decision a number of years ago that Olds is a community we wanted to stay and raise our family in," he said, adding his family moved to Olds 13 years ago. "Now being a part of promoting that and community services being one of the pillars to the growth for Olds, I'm excited to be more engaged in that."

His vision for the community services department, which oversees areas such as community relations and parks and recreation, is to focus on "engagement" by involving ratepayers and residents in the development of the community as it continues to grow.

Norm McInnis, the town's chief administrative officer, said the town wanted a person with specific skills and experience for the director position as well as "some things that were really peculiar to our needs in Olds."

"We looked at where we're going with our community services model, our relationship with the Olds Institute (for Community and Rural Development) and the need for the town to support community economic development, both through our operational services department and our community services department."

Wagstaff's first day as director is Sept. 16.
