Today's mobile homes may be larger than Town of Olds bylaw allows

Development officer predicted the problem in Olds will have to go before town council

OLDS — Many – if not most – mobile homes in town are likely in violation of the town’s land use bylaw because they’re made bigger than they used to be, development officer Kyle Sloan says.

As a result, he and operations director Scott Greico say that issue will likely have to come before a future town council meeting with a view to changing the land use bylaw accordingly.

Sloan raised the problem during a Municipal Planning Commission (MPC) meeting as the MPC considered a request to relocate a mobile home from out of town into one of the community’s three mobile home parks.

“I think almost all manufactured homes in the park will end up in MPC because the regulation in the land use bylaw states that the minimum rear yard of the property line has to be eight metres and that space doesn’t exist (for new mobile homes) in this park and the other parks too,” Sloan said.

MPC chair Mary Anne Overwater asked Greico if that concern will indeed come before council.

Greico predicted it would, after the issue is discussed with senior staff.

In the end, the MPC passed a motion approving the application to bring in the mobile home, as long as it meets several conditions.
