Former Olds resident Danielle Lappage will be wrestling in the Olympics in Rio this summer. Olds town council is looking at setting up a “Loonies For Lappage” campaign through which the town would match money raised for her up to $5,000. Here, Lappage watches the action during another fundraiser for her at The Bowl in Olds on April 23.

Council was expected to vote on a 1.5 per cent tax rate increase at its regular meeting last night.

The policies and priorities committee reviewed the proposal at its meeting on April 18.

The average assessment for both residential and non-residential properties rose for 2016. Combined with the tax rate increase, the average residential property owner would pay an additional $66.25 this year. The average non-residential commercial property owner would see an increase of $362.22 in taxes.

The committee directed administration to present its plan to support soon-to-be Olympic wrestler Danielle Lappage at a future council meeting.

If approved, the town would match resident donations up to $5,000.

The campaign is called "Loonies for Lappage," inspired by the frozen coins buried at centre ice during past Olympic hockey tournaments. Residents would be invited to drop off loonies and sign a Town of Olds flag for the Olds-born wrestler.

The committee directive also included searching for possible venues where donations could be collected. Some members were concerned about participation levels if they could only be made at the town office.

United Way Central Alberta discussed bringing its 211 phone service to the Red Deer area, including Olds.

The service allows callers to get information on social, government, health and community services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is free and offered in 150 languages.

There is also an online version at www. Ab.211.ca. However, the phone service is for people who do not already know what services are available to them.

Recent FCSS funding will allow United Way Central Alberta to bring 211 to Red Deer County, Penhold, Bowden, Delburne and Elnora this May.
