Local resident Kelly Niemeyer is part of an effort to send pet supplies to those affected by the wildfires in Fort McMurray.

Along with Oasis Tanning Lounge, she's collecting crates, food, toys, leashes, blankets and other goods.

"I understand why but I do think animals are overlooked … there are so many people had to leave behind," Niemeyer said.

Niemeyer also has a friend who works at a smoke shop in Sylvan Lake. Between the two of them, she estimates they've collected about $600 in goods.

Her plan was to make the trip up north on Saturday night.

She doesn't personally know anybody displaced by the fires. Niemeyer said she's just a big animal lover and felt moved to do something about the situation.

"It's heartbreaking. It's sad. It's unbelievable. It just feels very surreal," she said. "It's a massive loss everybody is going through."
