Dreamer, a donation steer raised by Eagle Beef and Multi 4-H Club president Annelise Corbett, 15, left, was bought by Shell Canada’s Caroline plant for $5,018 and donated to Make A Wish during the Eagle Beef and Multi 4-H Club’s 57th annual Show and Sale at the Cow Palace June 12. Here, April Cote of Make A Wish Southern Alberta, second from left, accepts the cheque. Representing Shell Canada Caroline are maintenance supervisor Clair Crosbie and field supervisor Billy-Joe Jensen.

The Eagle Beef and Multi 4-H Club held its 57th annual Show and Sale at the Cow Palace on June 12.

The club's donation steer, Dreamer, weighing 1,530 pounds and raised by club president Annelise Corbett, was bought by Shell Canada's Caroline plant for $5,018.40 ($3.28 per pound). Proceeds from that sale were donated to the Make A Wish Foundation.

The Grand Champion Steer, owned by Garret Crawford, weighing 1,492 pounds, was sold to Olds Fertilizers & Agri Services for $5,222 ($3.50 per pound).

The Reserve Champion Steer, owned by Brooklyn VanSickle and weighing 1,522 pounds, went to Richard Sietzema of Canadian Hay and Silage, for $5,022.60 ($3.30 per pound).

Bambi, the club donation lamb, raised by Dylan McLean, weighed 116 pounds and was sold to Wawedash Farms for $707.60 ($6.10 per pound).

Eagle Beef and Multi 4H Club donated proceeds from the Bambi sale to the Medicine River Wildlife Centre. Wawedash Farms donated the lamb to the Mountain View Food Bank.

The Grand Champion Lamb, owned by Lauren Minty, weighed 124 pounds and was sold to Niemeyer's Oilfield and Industrial Supplies for $756.40 ($6.10 per pound).

The Reserve Champion Lamb, owned by Dawson McLean, weighed 134 pounds and went to Dr. Luzi of Riverstone Vet Services, for $656.60 ($4.90 per pound).

Corbett is pleased with the price Dreamer fetched and the fact proceeds went to the Make a Wish Foundation.

The purpose of that foundation is to make the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions come true.

ìIt's great,î Corbett says. ìShell is a great supporter of 4-H and it's great to see them come out still and buy steers from our club.î

Corbett has been in 4-H for seven years. This is the first year she's raised a donation steer.

She was asked if she'll do that again next year.

ìI think definitely our club will, because our members love to give back to the community,î she says. ìI think there might be another member who would like to raise the donation steer and that's awesome.î

Shell Canada Caroline plant field supervisor Billy-Joe Jensen says the company was glad to make the purchase.

ìWe've been doing this for I don't know how many years ñ numerous years, I guess,î he says. ìWe buy one here, one in Sundre and one in Rocky (Mountain House), basically because we feel it's important on Shell's behalf that we support the community.î

He says the company buys a steer, raffles the cuts, and donates the money back to the causes involved.

Jensen says it's ìpretty coolî that in this case the money went to Make A Wish because to his knowledge, the company hasn't purchased one for that cause before.

ìThat's kind of a win-win for us to support that and get a nice steer,î he says.

"That's kind of a win-win for us to support that and get a nice steer." BILLY-JOE JENSENFIELD SUPERVISOR SHELL CANADA CAROLINE
