Olds Fire Department officials are urging residents - including landlords -- to make sure alarm systems are working properly and have their heating systems checked regularly by trained personnel to make sure they too are in good working order.

Olds Fire Department officials are urging residents - including landlords -- to make sure alarm systems are working properly and have their heating systems checked regularly by trained personnel to make sure they too are in good working order.

That advice comes after Olds firefighters received a call that smoke had been found in the hallways of a three-storey apartment at 5314 46th Ave. on Jan. 23.

The call came in at about 4:30 p.m. Eight firefighters from Olds and four firefighters from Didsbury as well as at least one unit of ambulance personnel responded.

The culprit turned out to be a malfunctioning forced-air furnace.

"The assistance from Didsbury was not required once the cause was found," an Olds Fire Department news release says.

Firefighters remained on scene for approximately one hour, clearing the atmosphere of smoke.

There were no injuries.
