Sidewalk café and sales bylaw goes to public engagement

The sidewalk sales and café bylaw might not be passed by the start of summer but town administration says it will work fast on public engagement.

"I don't believe it will be done for May. I haven't seen the framework for the public engagement yet but I do know intuitively, we need to do some around this particular one," said chief administrative officer Norm McInnis at the April 11 council meeting, responding to a council question.

"We will endeavour to get that done as quick as we can and get it back in front of council for second and third reading."

The bylaw is needed to monitor and regulate requests by businesses to use town roads and parking areas for sales and outdoor dining space. Council gave it first reading last week.

But the town will now do public engagement before the bylaw returns for second and third reading.

McInnis said a public hearing is not required because it's not a land use bylaw amendment at hand. But he says public engagement is necessary for this bylaw.

"We think this is an important topic. We need to engage the community at large before we bring this back to council for second and third reading," he said.

"We think we've done our homework but we just want to bounce it off people in the community."
