Santa's Secret Shop comes to Olds

For the first time ever, the Olds branch of Mountain View Credit Union (MVCU) is hosting Santa's Secret Shop – a way for kids to buy gifts that they can afford, with proceeds going to the Christmas Angels.

The Olds and District Christmas Angels Society provides toys for children of needy families in the community. It has also provided needy families with grocery gift cards for local grocery stores.

Santa's Secret Shop will be set up in the main level of the MVCU Olds branch this Friday, Dec. 2, from 1 to 5 p.m.

“Each item or package costs $5 and only children are permitted in the “store,” an MVCU news release says. “Every purchase is kept secret by our volunteer elves with complimentary on-site gift-wrapping.”

Coordinator and MVCU employee Joy Cavin came up with the idea to set up the shop at the Olds branch.

“One of our branches down in Langdon has been doing this for a couple of years, so we are expanding the concept to Olds,” she says.

About 20 MVCU employees are involved in the project.

Cavin says she and her fellow MVCU employees believe in the Christmas Angels and the work they do.

“Actually, the managers from Mountain View Credit Union – all of Mountain View Credit Union – always take an afternoon and go and do baskets and help Christmas Angels every year,” she says.

“So it's something that the credit union has been involved with for many years; we've just never been on the fundraising side (before).”
