The female kittens, which were named the Minions after characters in the Despicable Me films, are being cared for at the Olds Pioneer Veterinary Centre.
Workers at the Mountain View Regional Waste Management Commission found the pair in a plastic bag along with two other dead kittens on the morning of Nov. 4 when one of the living cats popped its head out of a pile of cardboard heading down a conveyor belt to a baling machine.
Someone had dumped the bag in a recycling bin at the Westview Co-op grocery store and the kittens were found covered in urine and feces.
They were brought to the veterinary centre where they were given food and medical treatment.
Jen McCall, a veterinary medical receptionist at the centre, said people have called to ask if the kittens were still available for adoption, but no one has followed through on bringing the animals home.
"Maybe people are assuming they got adopted," she said.
The kittens are in good health, McCall added, and recently received their first round of vaccinations.
"They’re growing like little weeds."
