Recent drug busts part of targetted enforcement

Olds' top cop says last week's relatively small drug bust in Olds Trailer Park is part of a targeted enforcement where size doesn't matter.

RCMP executed a search warrant at an undisclosed address in the park around 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 20.

Two marijuana plants and under 30 grams of cannabis marijuana were seized from the property, say police.

“It wasn't the seizure of a century by any means,” said Staff Sgt. Joe Sangster.

He dismissed the relevance of the size of the seizure.

“Whether it's five grams or five million we're going to be coming and that's a high priority for me,” Sangster said.

A 56-year-old woman was arrested and charged with trafficking of a controlled substance as well as production of a controlled substance in relation to the two plants police say were seized.

Sangster described them as being in the beginning stages of growth.

“They weren't that tall,” he said.

A 17-year-old male was also arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance in relation to the under 30 grams of marijuana police say they seized.

The quantity was described as small.

The search warrant was related to an ongoing investigation and complaints received from the public.

“These folks are well-known to us and we've had numerous complaints,” Sangster said.

Detachment spokesperson Cpl. Jay Peden told the Albertan in early August that a raid on two Olds residences July 31 and Aug. 1 was expected to be the beginning of further search warrants for drugs being executed.

The other investigations are “not necessarily related" but are based on information received from the public "about persons involved in the drug culture,” Peden said in August.
