James Colwell, 26, of Bowden was charged with careless use of a firearm, unsafe storage of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and mischief under $5,000 in regard to the incident, which occurred late last November.

Colwell received three years probation for the careless storage of a firearm charge and for the mischief to property offence.

He was also barred from possessing firearms for five years.

In another case in Provincial Court, a man facing 12 charges in connection with an incident in February when he was found driving in the Bowden and Innisfail areas with no lights on in the middle of the night has been sentenced.

Steven Wayne Gallant, 27, has been sentenced to more than three years (1,372 days) in prison. He had been sentenced to just under four years (1,450 days) in jail, but 78 days were taken off for time spent in pre-trial custody.

Provincial court officials say the punishment included:

30 days in jail, a $200 surcharge and a year's probation for dangerous driving.

30 days in jail, a $200 fine and a year's probation for flight from police charges.

60 days in jail, a $200 fine and a year's probation for having the proceeds of crime.

30 days in jail, $200 surcharges and a year's probation for several charges of failing to obey previous court-imposed conditions for release from custody.

"Members attempted to stop the vehicle and the male fled on foot, leaving the vehicle in gear and allowing it to drive into a snowbank," an RCMP news release says.

"RCMP, along with the Red Deer RCMP police dog service, were able to locate the driver and arrest him without incident."

Police say Gallant had been spotted earlier driving the same vehicle in Innisfail. They tried to stop it, but it fled, with Gallant driving in what RCMP describe as "an unsafe and dangerous manner."

"For public safety, police did not pursue the vehicle," a news release says.
