The next Home Routes house concert will bring an old-time fiddle duo to Olds on Feb. 5.

Spencer & Rains is made up of Howard Rains and Tricia Spencer.

Rains grew up in Texas and Spencer, in Kansas. Both grew up with folk music and started fiddling together after meeting at a festival.

Folk music, Rains says, appears to be making a comeback. He's seen lots of young people picking up instruments like the fiddle and the banjo.

"It's hard for me to say what exactly is behind it. I think in a world that seems to be kind of plastic, people are always looking for something real and grounded. I think this music provides that."

Home Routes is a non-profit organization that organizes series of concerts in people's homes. The shows feature professional musicians who would otherwise perform at large venues. Artists get to keep proceeds from admission and product sales. Home Routes receives a commission at the end of tours.

Rains, who has only visited Alberta once, says the house concert suits them perfectly.

"It's kind of our bread and butter. It fits really well with what we do. Our music isn't really suitable for a bar or any kind of noisy venue."
