OLDS — The Town of Olds is hoping to join six Alberta communities that are receiving federal funds to create more housing in their communities.

On Monday, federal housing minister Sean Fraser announced that six small Alberta communities will split $13.8 million to create more more than 3,100 homes over the next 10 years.

Those communities are Sylvan Lake, Banff, Bow Island, Westlock, Smoky Lake and the village of Duchess.

Money in the Housing Accelerator Fund is earmarked for communities that change their bylaws and regulations to encourage more home building.

Chief administrative officer Brent Williams says the Town of Olds also applied for some of that money.

“We submitted an application to this program back in the fall. We have not received any word on its status yet,” he wrote in an email.
