Olds RCMP were among several police detachments who combined to arrest an allegedly impaired driver accused of driving dangerously including driving the wrong way on Highway 2A.

The incident occurred on Saturday, July 16.

At 12:16 p.m., Airdrie Rural RCMP received a complaint of a small white Chevrolet Sonic car southbound on Highway 2A in the northbound lanes.

“This caused numerous vehicles to take evasive action to avoid a collision,” RCMP say.

The Chevy Sonic got onto Highway 2 where it changed directions to travel both northbound and then southbound several time between Olds, and Airdrie, with several more concerned citizens calling 911 to report what police describe as “dangerous driving behaviour.”

Olds RCMP, along with Didsbury RCMP patrolled the area to help find the vehicle. It was eventually stopped near Crossfield.

A 29-year-old Calgary man was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

He was transported to the Airdrie RCMP detachment where he provided samples of his breath that police say were 2.5 times over the legal limit.

He is scheduled to appear in Airdrie provincial court, charged with:

* impaired operation of a motor vehicle

* driving a motor vehicle over 80 mg per cent and

* dangerous driving

RCMP would like to thank all of the concerned citizens who made 911 calls to police in regards to this vehicle.

"It was due to the numerous complaints from concerned citizens that we were finally able to locate, stop and arrest the driver," said Const. Matt Gervais. "It is a miracle that no one was injured as a result of his driving today."
