Olds has become a key centre for people collecting donations to give to wildfire victims in Fort McMurray and area, according to a spokesman.

“As it turns out, Olds has become one of the biggest donation centres. We've got groups from Calgary, Carstairs, Sundre that are actually filtering all their donations directly to us to get out to the survivors,” says Jamie Houssian, a spokesman and project manager for a group collecting for Fort McMurray and area fire victims.

The group began collecting items for those victims several days ago at the Walmart parking lot. They're now located in the Canadian Tire parking lot.

Volunteer Jason Walroth says their next shipment will go up to the area this Saturday evening (May 7).

“We're going to see if anybody else wants to join us on the run up there. We're going to load up with volunteers and we're just going to go up there and start delivering to whoever needs it,” he says.

Walroth says driving through the night shouldn't be an issue.

“We're going to make it as far as we can, but we've got team drivers in every vehicle, so people will take turns driving,” he says.
