OLDS — A fundraiser to support Ukraine in the wake of invasion by Russia raised more than $15,000, an organizer says.

Perogies for Peace was held March 31 in the École Olds High School (ÉOHS) Commons.

It consisted of a sit-down or takeout meal. About 400 tickets were sold. In addition, an online auction was held and raffle tickets were sold.

About 100 volunteers, including senior high leadership students, helped organize and run the event over three days.

Student leadership advisor Luan Statchuk says the money raised will be divided among the Red Cross, the Alberta chapter of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, and local residents supporting friends and family in Ukraine.

“I am so grateful for the immense support we received from our community in donations, volunteerism, as well as ticket, raffle,” Statchuk wrote in an email. “I am very proud of ÉOHS senior high leadership students for their efforts to contribute to a worthy cause.”
