Olds crime stats down

The latest Olds crime stats are mixed, but overall, Cpl. Mike Black of the local detachment says the crime rate in the community is pretty good.

Black made that statement during an Olds and District Community Policing Advisory Society meeting last week.

On the positive side, break and enters are down 64.3 per cent; however, he said, thefts from vehicles are up 200 per cent.

Black said that's mainly due to people leaving their vehicle doors unlocked and their stuff inside those vehicles.

“It could be anybody going around, simply popping doors, no alarm goes off, easy target – in and out,” Black said. “That's the majority of where the thefts are coming from.

“We have had a few vehicle thefts around the area, some of them linked back into Calgary. But they've slowed down drastically over the past three weeks. So whoever was active has moved on, or we've heated it up and they're no longer active,” he added.
