No Bowden tax hike planned

BOWDEN ñ In theory, there's no increase in Bowden taxes this year, but that doesn't mean some property owners won't see increases while others might actually see a decrease. That's the word from Bowden chief administrative officer James Mason.

BOWDEN ñ In theory, there's no increase in Bowden taxes this year, but that doesn't mean some property owners won't see increases while others might actually see a decrease.

That's the word from Bowden chief administrative officer James Mason.

While as of late last week there were no plans to increase taxes in the town, changes in property assessments as well as a slight increase in school taxes ñ which the town has to collect on behalf of school divisions ñ will mean some property owners may be hit with tax increases while others might get a smaller bill this year.

Town council held a special meeting last night (Monday, May 15) to pass its tax collection bylaw and approve this year's budget.

Council decided to hold the special meeting at the suggestion of chief administrative officer James Mason.

He noted that otherwise, council would not meet until May 23, and if council waited until then to pass its taxation bylaw, staff would find it difficult to get tax notices out to all property owners by the end of the month.

He also pointed out that if council held a special meeting before that date, there'd be time to fix any glitches in the bylaw that might crop up.

ìYou can do all your information and you can get it into the system (but) sometimes you get a glitch somewhere and you end up having to redo the tax bylaw. I've seen it happen before,î James said during council's May 8 meeting. I'm hoping it doesn't happen.î
