Dustin Piper, the Olds man accused of murdering 40-year-old Garland Curtis of Airdrie in January, has yet to make a plea before the court.
The 23-year-old man, who is in custody at the Calgary Remand Centre, made a brief appearance in a Calgary courtroom on June 6 where Kris Wilkins, acting on behalf of Piper’s lawyer, Rebecca Snukal, asked for the matter to be put over until June 20 as the defence reviews disclosure information it recently received from police about the case.
Piper has been in custody since his arrest in Didsbury on March 16. Curtis was found dead in his Airdrie home on Jan. 10 after a co-worker in Fort McMurray reported him missing. Police have said Piper and Curtis knew each other. Although police have not provided details about how they knew each other, a man who attended a previous court appearance for Piper and told reporters he was in a relationship with the accused at the time of his arrest said Piper and Curtis had been romantically involved. The first-degree murder charge against Piper has not been proved in court.
