Traffic was tied up for about 45 minutes at three crossings in Olds last Thursday after a vehicle apparently tried to outrun a train.

A CP Rail spokesman says the incident occurred at about 1 p.m. at the Highway 27 (46th Street) railway crossing.

“Initial report is that we had a near miss at 46th Street as a vehicle tried to beat a train and ran through the crossing,” says Jeremy Berry of CP Rail media relations. “This led to the train going into emergency and ultimately, the delay.”

Officials say the train underwent an emergency stopping procedure which delayed traffic at three railway crossings in Olds.

“The safety mechanisms at the crossing were in working order,” Berry says.
