If you thought you saw some serious dirt during the World Plowing Championships, just wait until next month.
More than double the participants who competed in the Community Learning Campus's (CLC) 2012 Mud Run are expected to take part in this year's event at Olds College on Sept. 7.
"Everything is a little bit bigger and better this year," said Brittany Ehmann, the run's event coordinator, adding she is anticipating that 1,500 adults will compete in this year's run, up from the 700 participants who came out last year when the run was held for the first time.
As the name suggests, participants have to navigate a mud-saturated, five-kilometre course dotted with 16 obstacles, many of which have not been seen before.
And this year, young mud-lovers will have a chance to get in on the fun.
Ehmann said organizers decided to introduce a Filthy Frog component to the run for children aged five to 14.
The Filthy Frog run will consist of two divisions—one for ages five to nine and one for ages 10 to 14—and will use a 1.6-kilometre stretch of the adult course and have 10 obstacles.
It will take place at 2:30 p.m., after the completion of the adult run, which begins at noon with six waves of 250 people each going onto the course every 15 minutes.
Teams of between three and five people can sign up for $240 or individuals can sign up for $60.
The rate for Olds College students is $30 for individuals and $150 for a team and Filthy Frog participants can sign up for $10.
The deadline for registering is Sept. 4 but registration could end earlier if a maximum of 1,500 adults and 250 children is reached.
The event supports the CLC's various sports camps and activities for young people and the goal of the run is to promote fitness and healthy lifestyles among families in the community in a "fun way," Ehmann said.
Another new addition to the event this year is a charitable component where organizers are working with DeliverGood, an organization that connects charities and non-profit groups needing various goods with people and companies that have such goods.
Competitors can donate the shoes they use for the run to the organization, which will clean them and give them to area non-profit groups to distribute to people in need.
"We like to give back," Ehmann said.
She added she is expecting as many as 2,500 spectators and volunteers at the run and the event will also feature a "Mud Bash" with the band Mardi Gras from 4 to 7 p.m., as well as a beer garden, local vendors, a barbecue and a kid zone with a bouncy castle, face painting and basketball activities.
